In “Emilia Pérez”, French filmmaker Jacques Audiard takes a bold approach, weaving together a musical, crime thriller, and melodrama set in Mexico City. The result is a film that’s both ambitious and flawed.
The story follows Rita Mora Castro, a lawyer who’s kidnapped by a cartel boss and forced to facilitate his gender confirmation surgery in exchange for a hefty sum. Four years later, Rita’s transformed her life, but her journey takes a surprising turn when she meets Emilia Pérez, a woman who’s gone through a similar transformation.
The film’s biggest strength lies in its sheer energy and creativity. The musical numbers are often fantastical and emotional, ranging from rage-filled to joyful. However, the characters’ emotions often feel disconnected from the audience’s experience, making it difficult to fully invest in their stories.
The cast delivers strong performances, particularly Saldaña as Rita, who brings a captivating fierceness to her role. However, Rita’s character feels underwritten, lacking a clear arc or agency. The film’s themes of family, ambition, and change are ambitious, but the execution often feels clumsy and overly dramatic.
The supporting characters, particularly Jessi, feel like they belong to a different film altogether. Gomez shines in her role, but the character’s storyline veers into absurdity, with little relief or catharsis.
Despite its flaws, “Emilia Pérez” is a thrilling ride that’s worth experiencing. With its bold approach and creative storytelling, it’s a film that will leave you talking long after the credits roll.
Rating: 2.5/4 stars
Recommendation: Fans of crime thrillers and musicals will appreciate “Emilia Pérez”‘s unique blend of genres. However, those looking for a more nuanced character study or a more cohesive narrative may find themselves disappointed.
